Put-in-Bay {Review}

While I grew up in Florida, we moved away before I was an adult so I have never experienced Key West or “island” living. I’m a bit scared of open water so that has certainly had an impact as well. But recently we got to check out Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island in Lake Erie. What an adventure!

Your perfect Put-in-Bay Island getaway is waiting for you.
Put-in-Bay is a quaint village located on South Bass Island in Put-in-Bay Township, Ottawa County, Ohio, United States. Many people believe that the name originates from some early maps of South Bass Island that showed the main harbor being named Pudding Bay, probably because it was shaped like a pudding sack used by sailors. The official population was 128 as of the 2000 census. Put-in-Bay played a significant role in the War of 1812 as the location of the squadron of U.S. naval commander Oliver Hazard Perry, who sailed from the port on September 10, 1813 to engage a British naval squadron just north of the island in the famous Battle of Lake Erie. Put-in-Bay is a popular summer resort and recreational destination. Ferry service connects the community with Catawba Island, Kelleys Island, Port Clinton, Loraine, and Sandusky, Ohio.

A vacation packed full of Island adventure!
The island’s primary industry is currently tourism and for most of its history has been tourism. The tourist season runs roughly between April and October with peak visitation in July. The most common methods of transportation to and from the island are via ferry boat, propeller-driven aircraft and private boat. Boat docks and a municipal airport service visitors daily.

Take a deep, warm Island breath.
Visitors step back in time with Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry to learn about the Battle of Lake Erie at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial Visitors Center and the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society Museum. Come and explore the world’s largest geode at Heineman’s Crystal Cave or discover South Bass Island’s underground river, lake and tour at Perry’s Cave Amusement Complex. Honeymooners and romantics take in the magnificence of our island sunsets while strolling along the walks and pathways of our beautiful downtown harbor and DeRivera park area. Weekday and weekend boaters can dock in the heart of it all at a number of public and private docks and are just steps away from fabulous boutiques, excellent restaurants, live entertainment and spirited taverns. Families and visitors will also have the opportunity to enjoy a multitude of other attractions including Heineman’s winery, The Butterfly House, putt-putt golf, historical homes & tours, the Chocolate Museum, wildlife museum, an antique carousel, a nine hole par-3 golf course, multiple jet-ski rentals, boat rentals, parasailing, kayaking, and the Put-in-Bay Resort’s Convention Center.

This is definitely a laid-back and fun place to be. Whether you’re visiting for the day with your family, bringing in your friends for a fun getaway, or wanting to relax at a local B&B and visit the local wineries, Put-in-Bay has all of it. It’s hard to believe that the island itself is fairly small because it packs so many activities into one place.

Of course we took the Jet Express over from Sandusky and picked up our 6-person golf cart to get us started. During the course of the day, we explored probably every street on the island! Just riding along and checking out the houses, shops and views of the lake made for a great day. We visited two state parks while we were exploring; both Oak Point State Park and South Bass Island State Park.

Oak Point State Park is fairly small but not too far from the boardwalk. I was thankful for the clean bathrooms and water fountains! There’s also some green space for relaxing or taking a break, plus an area for fishing and boat docks for rent.

South Bass Island State Park is larger and offers more things to do but it’s further away from the ferry landing. They have everything from campsites to cabins, plus a playground, boat docks, food stand, and plenty of green space to have a picnic or just have fun outside for a few hours.

Next on our list was visiting Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center! This place offers gem mining, cave exploring, a butterfly house and more. I love that you can do all of these activities in the same place without having to drive back and forth. Plus they offer combo tickets if you plan ahead of time.

Also on the island is a national monument! It’s called Perry’s Victory and International Peace Museum. It’s so tall I think you can see it almost anywhere on the island and quite a ways out in the water too!

Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial was established to honor those who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie, during the War of 1812, and to celebrate the long-lasting peace between Britain, Canada and the U.S. The Memorial, a Doric column, rising 352 feet over Lake Erie is situated 5 miles from the longest undefended border in the world.

While our trip was more family oriented, rest assured, this place can definitely party too! During peak season, hotels, condos, and rental houses are packed! Parties can get loud and alcohol does flow freely; this wouldn’t be a problem if we were staying during this time because I’d have my kids settled in for the night and hopefully avoid any of that. LOL

I’d recommend Put-in-Bay to anyone looking for a fun place to explore for the day, a weekend away, fishing, or just a local place to experience island life. Just minutes from Sandusky on the Jet Express Ferry, there is something for everyone, no matter their age or interests. Don’t forget to reserve your golf cart during your stay, parking is a premium for cars and trucks! You can learn more on the Put-in-Bay Visitors and Convention Bureau website as well as following them on Facebook and Twitter.

Disclaimer: All of the day’s activities, except for Jet Express and the golf cart rental, were not sponsored but visited as a family adventure. We’d love to come back to Put-in-Bay and work with their tourism board in the future though!
